The Annual
Diamonds International / Substance Abuse Foundation
Charity Golf
Tournament held on Sunday, March 12th, 2006
Golf
Classic Tournament
The
Diamonds International/Substance Abuse Foundation Charity Golf Classic
was initiated in 1998 to raise funds for Verdun House the drug and
alcohol rehabilitation centre.
From its
inception the Substance Abuse Foundation (SAF) has had the full
support of Diamonds International. Funds were required to renovate the
Verdun House in St. John into a treatment center. The SAF’s mission is
to provide a drug free supportive environment where clients can build a
foundation for their recovery efforts and integrate the necessary behavioral
changes to maintain a commitment to sobriety. For the past seven years
Diamonds International has been the major fund-raiser for Verdun House by
sponsoring the Diamonds International Golf Classic held at the
luxurious Royal Westmoreland Golf and Country Club. (www.royalwestmoreland.com)
The year
2000 was a particularly important year since the funds raised were used to
establish the first women’s rehabilitation centre on the island. More funds
are still needed to get this project initiated.
Corporate
Barbados fully supports
this charity by sponsoring teams and the money raised at the tournament
helps to manage the SAF centre which is a place of healing from addiction
for many Barbadian men and women. The last Tournament in February 2005 was a
crowning success with over US$ 55,000 being raised.
This
year’s event is expected to have greater hype with the anticipated
sponsorship of a luxury watch brand.
Diamonds
International would like to thank all those persons who come together to
make this event happen and happen in an big way! Thank you!
